Though Dhuvaafaru was abandoned until recently, there is physical and literary evidence that the island was inhabited more than 200 years ago. The island is named after the great battlefield hero Dhandahelu, who is represented in the account of Maldives independence war against Portuguese invasion in the 17th century and is referred to in historical literature as Dhuvaafaru Dhandahelu.
