The people of Feydhoo are former Gan inhabitants. Gan was a fertile island, with coconut palms, breadfruit trees, yam, binbi, and a variety of other vegetation growing. Gan's inhabitants were economically self-sufficient even throughout World War II. However, in 1956/1957, they were forced to abandon their long-standing livelihood because the British Royal Air Force leased the island to establish RAF Gan, a military facility on the island.
