In August 1941, the net layer HMS Guardian landed Royal Navy construction crews on Addu Atoll in the Maldives Islands to begin work on a secret naval base for Britain's Eastern Fleet. Though in public British leaders continued to point to Singapore as the lynchpin of the Far Eastern defenses, they had already grown concerned that the “Malay Barrier” of Malaya, Sumatra and Java could not be held in the event of a Japanese attack.

Hithadhoo Regional Hospital in the South Province of the Maldives was established with the aid of donated funds by UNICEF and opened in 1984.

Equatorial Convention Centre is a convention centre which is located in Hithadhoo, Addu City of Maldives. It was specially built for the seventeenth SAARC summit which was held in November 2011 in Addu City and nearby Fuvahmulah island.

The Addu Nature Park encompasses the beautiful Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and protected Koattey area in Hithadhoo Island. The park features charming piers extending out to the lakes, mangroves and scenic cycling routes through the lush vegetation of the wetlands.

The United Suvadive Republic was a short-lived breakaway nation from the Kingdom of Maldives. It existed between 1958 to 1963 consisting of the three southern atolls of the Maldive archipelago, Addu Atoll, Huvadhu Atoll and Fuvahmulah. Abdulla Afeef Didi was its first and only president who was democratically elected
