The 2004 tsunami had a significant impact on the island, however coral reefs mitigated some of the damage. Mr. Sigee, the island's chief, described the water as reaching his chin. Two weeks after the accident, it was discovered that the island's inhabitants had lost at least sixteen persons, and that the island's mango and banana plants had been poisoned by the seawater. Some residences, as well as a century-old mosque, were demolished.
