Malé

The whole island bundle, the Maldives, is named after its capital. "Maldives" signifies "the islands (dives) of Malé".

Malé City is the capital and most crowded city in the Republic of Maldives. With a populace of 227,486 and a space of 8.30 square kilometers (3.20 sq mi), it is likewise one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The city is geologically situated at the southern edge of North Malé Atoll (Kaafu Atoll). Officially, the city comprises of a focal island, an airport island, and four different islands administered by the Malé City Councils.

Traditionally it was the King's Island, from where the old imperial traditions administered and where the royal residence was found. The city was then called Mahal. Formally it was a walled city encircled by fortifications and gates (doroshi).
