Mohamed Thakurufaanu (Boduthankurufaanu), the Maldivian hero who resisted Portuguese domination in the Maldives, Mohamed Thakurufaanu's mother was an Ihavandhoo woman. The island has always been a fishing island, with the bulk of the working age population consisting of skilled fisherman. Ihavandhoo is also responsible for the country's tuna (both chilled and frozen) and dried fish exports.
