Himandhoo


On March 1, 1984, Himandhoo of Alifu Alifu Atoll was divided into two islands. Ari Atoll was appointed as the North Branch in 1997 by the President of The Republic of Maldives that have been granted legal status. The english letter given to Himandhoo of Alifu Alifu Atoll are 9U and the Maldivian character is (އއ). Geographically, the atoll is located in the region of °3 55.178'N and 72° 44.671'E. The island is 89 nautical miles away from Male' City with a total of 19.4 hectares. The island has a total of 120 houses, of which 114 live in houses. There are two mosques in The Island, one has been set up an ancient mosque. There are two registered guesthouses. There are 4 guest shops but 7 shops, 1 hotel and 2 restaurants registered as businesses. The total population is 892. The residents of the island, which is inhabited by 452 men and 440 women, are engaged in tourism, fishing, farming, carpentry (furniture and housebuilding) and construction. Domestic work is still being carried out with great enthusiasm.

Some important government institutions have been established in Himandhoo to serve the people of the island. A magistrate court has been established to provide judicial services, including Himandhoo Health Centre, Maldives Police Service, Himandhoo School, and stelco's electricity supply. Also, to provide medicines, STO Pharmacy has been established in the island.

Ahmed Aboobakuruwas one of the most famous persons in AA. Himandhoo. His nick or famous name was “Ahmedbe”. If anyone calls this name, everyone in the island and even all the islands in the atoll will know who he is. He was the greatest healer in the island in which he worked with bare hand. His outstanding skill was shined in the atoll even after his death. He used substance from trees and other natural resources to heal the wounds and fractures. The greatest highlights in his practice were, the perfect treatment to cure fractures, infectious and non-infectious diseases, and medical condition of his patients without having x-ray or any other investigation. He treated many people across the Maldives and cured.

Apart from his medical skill he was the “imam” of the mosque in his age and became the most population social worker in the island. He was a great leader and worked very hard to unite the island even during the political instability. In addition to that, he was with island chief and always played a huge role for the development of the island. As an example, the first electric engine was brought to the island under his leadership.

On the other hand, he was very kind, and friendly person to everyone. He played a great role to empower women and prevent public from smoking and other ill health lifestyles. He showed the youth the importance of earning from own works and help others who are in need.
